The second section which illustrates the traditionary phase is "Life of Buddha" which commences with events previous to Buddha's, last birth and ends with his attainment of Buddahood. It was translated from a popular Siamese work "Pathomma Somphothiyan". The third section, describing the ultra-superstitious phase, is an account of the "Phrabat or Siamese Footprint of Buddha" In the description of his journey to visit the Phrabat the author recounts impressions of the Sismese people, monks and temples.

Noting the wealth of literature in the West on Confucianism, the author writes to fill a void in previous writings in English which have "given too little attention to the religions of Buddha and Tao." He does a comparative study of the three "religions" under such categories as conflicts and coexistence, notions of God and morality, sin, immortality, and redemption. He further examines Roman Catholic mission efforts, and the condition of some minor religious communities such as the Muslims, Jews and Zen Buddhists, The final chapter contains the author's estimation of the religious spirit motivating the T'ai-p'ing rebels, who had been active for seven years at the time of writing.
