This volume can be divided into three parts. Initially, Eitel traces the history of Sino-British relations under the domination of the East India Company from 1625 to 1834 The second portion traces the course of British public opinion and government policy toward China following the failure of Lord Napier's mission to Canton in 1834. During this period public sentiment grew for the establishment of a British colony in China. The final portion deals with the pre-British history of Hong Kong, the cession of Hong Kong to British in-1841, and the administrative history of the colony The administrative history is a term by term account of the affairs of Hongkong under each governor that served there between 1841 and 1882. This volume contains considerable data on the politics, finances, social problems, trade, and commerce of Hongkong. |

A concise account of the diplomatic career of Sir Harry Parkes in China, Siam, Japan, and Korea. Parkes began his service in China in 1841 and died there as Minister Plenipotentiary in Peking in 1885. Parkes was present at the signing of the Treaty of Nanking, participated in the Arrow War and the march on Peking after the Tientsin incident, worked in the mission of Lord Elgin, and held numerous administrative positions in the treaty port. Through the record of Parkes' activities and his writings, and the account of the service of Sir Rutherford B. Alcock, a relatively complete account of British diplomatic activity in China during the mid-nineteenth century can be obtained. |

An interpretive history of the British conquest of India. In a somewhat cynical analysis the author attempts briefly to expose the motives underlying the European desire to conquer and colonize. British activity in India is traced from its beginnings in the early 1600's to the 1870's with analysis proceeding in the same manner. Special attention is paid to the plight of the indigenous population of each area as the British expanded their control and rule. |
