The San Tzu Ching, attributed to the authorship of Wang Ying-lin (A.D. 1223-1296), was used as an elementary guide to knowledge for Chinese school children prior to the founding of the Republic. It is composed of "356 alternately rhyming lines of three characters to each, and containing about 500 different characters in all " The text of the San Tzu Ching teaches basic Confucian concepts of man and human relationships, exhorts the youth to learn, and introduces the Classics, Philosophers and the chronology of Chinese history. Giles gives the Mandarin pronunciation of each word, and a literal and a free translation for every phrase. The explanatory notes following each line of text give a structural analysis of every new character-according to the Shuo Wen, a dictionary of the second century A. D.-and additional comments. This volume is an interesting introduction to classical Chinese language and fundamental philosophical concepts.

Emperor Chien-wen of the Liang dynasty(梁) is credited as being the most prolific litterateur of any of the Chinese royal houses. He is also given much of the credit for the establishment of the "palace-style" genre in the Chinese classical poetic tradition. Long considered decadent by traditional Chinese scholarship, this genre and the poetry in general of the sixth century has not been the subject of interest of historieans of Chinese literature. But the influence of the poetry of this period on the development of the Chinese poetic tradition cannot be denied. And the poetry of Emperor Chien-wen is by far the most representative and technically brilliant poetry of this period.

The index is prefaced by a chronological table of the Ch'un-ch'iu years giving the reign year of the Duke of Lu and pagination in Legge. The index consists of place names, personal names, and phrases listed by radical and stroke of the first character occurring in the name or phrase. The Wade Giles system of romanization is used with definitions generally according to Legge. The location of the characters is to the Chinese text in Legge by page and line. There are 3,547 major entries in this index, which is an extremely useful complement to Legge Volume 5.

Karlgren summarizes the opinions of the leading scholars, then proceeds, by way of grammatical analysis, to show that the Tso-chuan has a distinctive homogeneous grammar, was not written by the same author as the Kuo Yu and is an authentic text of the fifth or fourth century B.C.

This diary is a remarkable work, touching as it does. At so many points on vital aspects of Japanese thought and culture. As already indicated, though the scenery it depicts is localized, it deals notably with elements of thought that Japan and China have shared in common.
