The author served as a war correspondent with the Japanese Army during the takeover of Formosa in 1895 and was later appointed United States Consul for Formosa. A considerable portion of this work is devoted to a description of natural resources, industry, and trade in Formosa. Detailed treatment is also given to the inhabitants and plant life of Formosa.
