A port by port survey of foreign trade is made with Japanese trade treated separately. Chinese and foreign currency and weights and measures arc also detailed. The appendix on sailing directions is in effect a descriptive geography of the seas, coast, and islands from Singapore to Hakodai. For the Chinese coast and islands characters are inserted. Each coastal area or island is precisely located and a description of its topography and location of population is given.

Morse incorporates a large number of statistics into his discussion, often in the form of tables, color maps and illustrations.
CW 30 Morse, H. B. The Gilds Of China (中國的會館組織). With An Account Of The Gild Merchant Or Cohong Of Canton. (London: 1909) 4711871498785 550
Morse deals with three topics on the basis of personal knowledge and documentary material. The origin and operation of craft guilds in England and China are compared. A unique organization comprised of officials and merchants foreign to the province in which they reside, known as "Provincial club" (Hui-Kuan) is discussed. Three clearly forked instances of merchant guilds are discussed with principal attention given to the co-hong merchants, their regulations, and their activities.
